There’s a new model for defense technology development, Alan R. Shaffer, principal deputy director of Defense Research and Engineering, told an AUSA Winter Symposium audience as the event opened. And it means identifying and developing emerging technologies at a much faster pace–no matter where in the world they pop up. As an example, Shafer said the military was able to take advantage of German and South African developments and adapt them to cut the weight of MRAP armor by one-third — and in just 12 months.
