Sgt. Star, the gesturing virtual recruiter on screen who can answer basic questions so that real recruiters can spend their time more effectively, is just one phase of a rapidly advancing Army simulations program. Dr. Randall W. Hill Jr., executive director of the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California, said Hollywood know-how is being blended with Army training to give soldiers new ways to prepare for missions. Stages have been created that — when mixed with realistic screen displays, audio, and even temperature changes — put soldiers right in the middle of scenarios they might face in the field. Hill said the characters the soldiers interact with are getting more and more realistic.
