Army Preparing for “Hybrid Wars”

The U.S. Army is emphasizing a focus on preparing for a range of future conflict contingencies such as continued irregular and so-called “hybrid wars” known to combine conventional and irregular combat tactics, service leaders said at the Association of the United States Army Winter 2009 Symposium.

“We see the signs already of hybrid wars such as Lebannon,” said U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Vane, who directs the Army Capabilities Integration Center, Fort Monroe, Va.

Vane said an approach to the future includes the need to expect the unexpected.  “If you put your entire focus on what might be the future, it will probably induce that not to occur,” he said.

Vane spoke of the Army effort to develop affordable technologies for the future while understanding a full-spectrum approach, which includes a “whole-of-government” approach. Referring to the Army’s expectation of a “state of persistent conflict” for the next ten to 15 years, Vane said the Army plans to increase cooperation with Special Operations Forces, other services and allied nations.
