LIMA, Peru - Peru Vice President Luis Giampietri and 27 Navy officials are being probed for illicit arms deals during the administration of ex-president Alberto Fujimori, a government official said Nov. 5.

Giampietri, a former Navy vice admiral, has been investigated by a public prosecutor for multimillion-dollar arms purchases and the case is currently being considered by a judge, newspaper La Republica reported.

Prosecutors accuse the group of "taking advantage of their position and decision-making power in the Navy to favor an undetermined group of companies."

The firms were said to have sold goods, including weapons, worth millions of dollars to the state, and are alleged to be linked to disgraced former head of Peruvian intelligence, Vladimiro Montesinos.

The investigation centers on 50 Navy contracts between 1995-97 worth $45 million.
